ZRAM is a Linux kernel feature that compresses RAM in place, effectively multiplying available memory without extra hardware. On a Raspberry Pi 5 with 4GB RAM, installing ZRAM via the Pi-Apps store (using ZSTD compression at a 4:1 ratio) can theoretically provide up to 16GB of usable memory. Installation takes about 3 minutes and requires no hardware changes. The trade-off is increased CPU usage for compression, though this is minimal for most desktop workloads. The improvement is especially noticeable on older, lower-RAM Pi models like the Pi 3B or Pi Zero.
