Modular monoliths aren't a new concept—they represent fundamental software design principles from the 1960s-70s that were never lost, just forgotten. The real problem isn't monoliths versus microservices, but messy versus well-structured systems. Microservices don't automatically provide modularity; they require the same design thinking needed for well-structured monoliths. The industry has repeatedly rediscovered modularity, information hiding, separation of concerns, and interface design across different paradigms (procedural, OO, components, services). Understanding these timeless principles matters more than chasing architectural trends, as poor structure will follow you regardless of whether you deploy as one process or many.
