JP Morgan Chase engineers Luis Albinati and Surabhi Mahajan presented at QCon London 2026, arguing that multi-cloud complexity is fundamentally an organisational problem, not a technical one. Most enterprises end up multi-cloud by accident and then try to engineer their way out of the chaos. Their solution: treat multi-cloud as a product. This means organising around horizontal capabilities (observability, cost management, identity, networking) rather than per-cloud silos, implementing structured demand governance with intake windows, and identifying real users. A concrete logging platform example showed how deploying OpenTelemetry collectors at the edge to filter noise before data crosses network boundaries cut log volume by 60–80% and reduced mean time to identify incidents from hours to minutes. Key principles include capabilities over siloed solutions, golden paths over bespoke one-offs, and resilience over mere portability.
