<p>Python 3.14.5 shipped on May 8, 2026, and its most significant change is a reversion: the incremental garbage collector introduced in 3.14.0 is gone, replaced by the classic generational GC from Python 3.13.</p>
<h2>What happened</h2>
<p>The incremental GC was part of the Faster CPython project. It replaced the traditional three-generation collector with a two-generation incremental model designed to reduce pause times by scanning fewer objects per cycle. The idea was sound in theory — shorter, more frequent collections instead of occasional large sweeps.</p>
<p>In practice, it caused objects to accumulate faster than they were collected. A minimal reproduction using HTTPX demonstrated unbounded memory growth in real-world workloads, and production reports confirmed the pattern was widespread.</p>
<p>This isn’t the first time this change has been pulled. The incremental GC was originally attempted in Python 3.13, reverted there due to performance regressions, then landed again in 3.14 — and has now been reverted a second time.</p>
<p>There’s also a process issue worth noting: the change bypassed the PEP system entirely, which likely meant it didn’t get the scrutiny it needed before shipping. If it comes back for Python 3.16, it will need to go through a formal PEP.</p>
<h2>What’s shipping</h2>
<p>The revert affects both 3.14 and 3.15. For 3.14, the fix is in 3.14.5, which includes around 154 bugfixes, build improvements, and documentation changes alongside the GC reversion. The macOS installer now bundles Tcl/Tk 9.0.3.</p>
<p>For 3.15, still in alpha, an extra alpha release may be issued to carry the revert.</p>
