Comparison of Pygame and Pyglet libraries for Python game development, focusing on their suitability for 2D and 3D games.

Pygame Vs Pyglet

Both libraries can be used for 2D and 3D game development. Pygame is a wrapper for SDL2 and relies on it heavily, and Pyglet is similar, but it’s graphics API is built around OpenGL. Pyglet can be used for games, but is more general purpose (It does have a sprite class though). However, Pygame does have support for OpenGL though the use of ModernGL and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@DaFluffyPotato" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Da Fluffy Potato</a> has some good tutorials on both normal Pygame, and ModernGL with it.
I haven’t used Pyglet but I do use Pygame. According to multiple sources, Pyglet is faster than Pygame, even when Pygame has ModernGL, but if you are looking purely for performance there are other languages that are better for 3D game development such as C++. One thing to note is that Da Fluffy Potato has made a VR game using Pygame (input management), ModernGL (Graphics), PyOpenAL (Audio), and PyOpenXR (For connecting with VR), so you can still make 3D games without utilising much of Pygame.
Generally Pygame doesn’t have to use ModernGL for 2d games, and sdl2 is very simple and easy to use, so it won’t be an issue in that scope. I wouldn’t say that the Pyglet syntax is as easy as Pygame’s, but it’s still extremely accessible.
