Pull The Plug Modeling (PTPM) is a mindset for domain modeling sessions that asks participants to imagine their domain without electricity — just people, paper, and pens. By removing technology from the conversation, technical shortcuts disappear and the real domain becomes visible. The approach reveals key insights: information flows are inherently asynchronous, document ownership implies accountability, corrections leave traces (suggesting append-only thinking), deletion is unnatural, business vocabulary encodes intent rather than mechanics, and data duplication is sometimes correct. PTPM is especially valuable when replacing legacy systems, where users have been trained to describe software rather than their actual work.
