South Africa's National Gambling Board (NGB) has issued a formal compliance notice to all nine provincial licensing authorities reiterating that online and interactive gambling remains illegal under current national legislation. The NGB, aligned with a directive from the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications, clarified that servers facilitating remote gambling cannot be certified under the South African national standard Sans 1718-4:2018. Provincial authorities are instructed to enforce the ban and take action against non-compliant operators. Meanwhile, national treasury is considering a 20% gambling tax to address social costs, with public consultation ongoing.
