Databricks SQL's Default Warehouse feature is now generally available, allowing workspace admins to specify which SQL warehouse is automatically selected for ad hoc queries. Without a configurable default, users could accidentally wake up wrong warehouses, causing unexpected costs and performance issues. Admins can set a workspace-level default via Workspace Settings, while users can override it for themselves. New APIs (and Terraform support) let admins programmatically assign per-user warehouse defaults and audit overrides. Over 300 customers have already used the feature, reporting reduced misuse of production warehouses and faster performance triage. Future plans include extending Default Warehouse to off-platform sources like MLflow and DBSQL MCP.
