Session, the open-source, end-to-end encrypted messaging app that requires no phone number or email, is facing a funding crisis. The Session Technology Foundation has lost all paid staff and developers, leaving the project run entirely by volunteers. Infrastructure funding runs out on July 8, 2025. Development is paused, new features are off the table, and bug fixes are unlikely. The foundation needs $1 million to complete Protocol v2 (adding forward secrecy and post-quantum cryptography) and launch Session Pro, a subscription tier meant to make the project self-sustaining. Only $65,000 of that goal has been raised so far.
