Azure HorizonDB is a new managed PostgreSQL offering from Microsoft that decouples compute and storage, supporting up to 3,072 cores and 128TB storage with sub-millisecond multi-zone commit latency. It runs on AMD EPYC processors and includes native AI integration via Microsoft Foundry, enabling vector indexing and SQL-based AI functions (like GPT-based data extraction) out of the box. A new optimized DiskANN vector index consolidates filtering into a single operation, achieving ~3x better performance than the prior version. For OLTP workloads, HorizonDB delivers over 9,000 TPS compared to ~4,000 TPS with open-source PostgreSQL and Patroni. Read scaling across replicas reaches nearly 270,000 TPS with three replicas under a single load-balanced endpoint.
