What’s the difference between DevOps, Continuous Delivery and Platform Engineering, is Platform Engineering really the next big thing. You could ask “what’s in a name” fundamentally what we do matters more than how we name what we do, but the names that we use for ideas can help. Most people don’t do deep research into what works best for software development, which may be a shame because how we choose to organise our work has a huge impact on how well we can do that work. This means that if people only have a cursory view of ideas like platform engineering, DevOps or CD, then it is easy to mistake their advantages, and what is involved.

In this episode, Dave Farley best-selling author of “Continuous Delivery” and “Modern Software Engineering” explores these ideas and describes why, in his view, Platform Engineering is no replacement for either DevOps or Continuous Delivery.

DevOps is a synonym for continuous delivery, not a replacement. Continuous delivery aims to continuously deliver releasable software into production. DevOps encompasses collaboration between development and operations, but also extends to other aspects of software production. Platform engineering is about team structure and software design, while continuous delivery covers testing, deployment, and operations.

Platform Engineering vs DevOps

If you take “DevOps” as meaning the researched model, it’s Continuous Delivery, plus a bunch of other things (cultural capabilities, measures of success).
One of the topics close to the DevOps research is Team Topologies - ways to design team structures. One team design is the “platform team”, and one kind of platform team is what is described by Platform Engineering.
So, Platform Engineering is within Team Topologies, which is within DevOps along with Continuous Delivery.
If Platform Engineering hadn’t launched in a smokescreen of “DevOps is Dead” there wouldn’t be all this confusion. It was a dramatic by miscalculated move (and the author mentioned they perhaps regretted that approach in a podcast!)
