PlanetScale launched its managed sharded Postgres service, PlanetScale Metal, on AWS and Google Cloud, expanding beyond its MySQL-based platform. Built on NVMe drives with unlimited I/O, it promises better performance and lower costs than Aurora, Cloud SQL, or Supabase. The company is developing Neki, a Postgres sharding solution inspired by Vitess, though it won't be open source initially. Plans start at $39/month with no free tier. PlanetScale also partnered with Cloudflare to enable database deployment from Workers.
