A personal review of the Pinebook Pro ARM laptop by a developer who previously used a ThinkPad X200. The author highlights ARM ecosystem challenges (no upstream Alpine Linux support, missing kernel features for webcam and USB-C display output), weak speakers, and a mediocre touchpad. On the positive side, the laptop is praised for its lightweight 14" form factor, good screen, decent keyboard, 6-8 hour battery life, USB-3 ports, USB-C charging, and user-serviceability. Performance is modest but acceptable for parallelizable workloads in most languages. Despite ARM frustrations, the author considers it the best laptop improvement in a decade and plans to use it as their primary machine.
