Pidgin 3.0 Alpha 1 (version 2.95.0) has been released, marking the first alpha milestone for the long-awaited major version. Key highlights include a new AccountSettings API replacing the old AccountOption API (enabling protocol plugins in Python/Lua), a reworked account editor, initial Zulip protocol plugin skeleton, a new developer mode, and removal of the libxml2 dependency in favor of SQLite3. The release is intended for developers and tinkerers only — not end users — as many features are unfinished and bugs are numerous. Packagers are asked not to distribute it yet. Alpha 2 is scheduled for 2026-06-30 with version 2.96.0.
