Picking uncontested private IP subnets with usage data

Analysis of 1.79 million WD Cloud devices reveals usage patterns of RFC1918 private IP address ranges. The 192.168.0.0/16 range dominates with 90% usage, while 172.16.0.0/12 and 10.0.0.0/8 remain largely underutilized. Data shows specific subnets heavily used by router manufacturers (FritzBox uses 192.168.178.0/24, TP-Link uses 192.168.68.0/24). The research identifies thousands of unused /24 subnets in the 172.16 and 10.0 ranges, providing network administrators with data-driven choices for avoiding subnet conflicts when connecting networks via VPN or during company mergers.
