While starting this post I realized I have been maintaining personal
infrastructure for over a decade!
Most of the things I’ve self-hosted is been for personal uses. Email server, a
blog, an IRC server, image hosting, RSS reader and so on. All of these things
has all been a bit all over the place and never properly streamlined. Some has
been in containers, some has just been flat files with a nginx service in front
and some has been a random installed Debian package from somewhere I just
forgot.

Readers can learn about a wide range of topics, from software development and system administration to cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. With user submissions, comments, and voting, Lobsters provides a platform for collaborative learning and knowledge sharing among technology enthusiasts.

A decade-long journey of self-hosting personal services culminates in a streamlined setup using Incus for container orchestration, OpenTofu for declarative infrastructure management, and a WireGuard tunnel to expose services through a VPS. The infrastructure runs on mixed hardware (2012 NAS, Intel and AMD NUCs) with a flat network topology, hosting everything from email and blogs to media services. Services are deployed as LXC containers, VMs, or OCI containers, with persistent data on NAS and static sites synced via Syncthing to /srv directories for simple publishing without CI/CD overhead.
