Researchers at the University of Chicago developed PenPal, a robotic drawing assistant that uses tendons and servos to make repeating pen movements while artists focus on larger creative tasks. Originally designed for shading, the tool revealed emergent behaviors when tested with ten artists, some of whom developed novel drawing techniques and described the experience as collaborating with another person. The project highlights how new human-robot interaction tools can produce unexpected creative outcomes.
