The Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) had its account terminated by payment processor Nexi Group, cutting off around 450 recurring donors. FSFE claims Nexi demanded access to supporters' usernames and passwords, which it refused on privacy grounds. Nexi counters that it only requested test credentials to verify users could cancel subscriptions as part of a KYC compliance process required by German regulator BaFin, and that FSFE failed to respond adequately. The dispute left FSFE unable to receive credit card donations, and the charity is now transitioning to a new payment provider, though existing supporter accounts cannot be automatically migrated.
