MIT researchers developed a parking-aware navigation system that uses dynamic programming and probability modeling to route drivers to optimal parking lots rather than directly to their destination. By factoring in parking availability likelihood, walking distance, and the behavior of other drivers, the system achieved up to 66% time savings (about 35 minutes) in simulated Seattle traffic data. The approach also explores crowdsourced parking data as a practical input, showing only ~7% error rate compared to actual availability. Beyond driver convenience, the system aims to reduce urban congestion, cut emissions from circling vehicles, and give commuters accurate travel time estimates that could encourage shifts to public transit.
