Paradox Interactive has reported a stark 90% drop in operating profit for the second quarter of 2024, primarily attributed to the cancellation of the game Life by You and the subsequent closure of its developer, Tectonic. The Swedish publisher’s operating profit fell dramatically to SEK 28.9 million, a sharp decline from SEK 293 million in Q2 2023. The cancellation of Life by You alone incurred a cost of SEK 208 million.
CEO Fredrik Wester remarked that while core titles such as Age of Wonders 4 and Crusader Kings III continued to perform admirably, the significant financial hit necessitated a strategic shift. Moving forward, the company plans to focus less on high-risk projects, a sentiment underscored by the closure of Paradox Tectonic, which affected 24 employees.
The financial downturn also highlighted a 22% decline in overall revenue compared to the previous year. Despite successes from expansions of core games, Paradox encountered additional challenges with other releases like Cities: Skylines II and The Lamplighters League, which did not meet performance expectations.
