Palo Alto Networks announced its intent to acquire Portkey, an AI gateway processing trillions of tokens monthly for Fortune 500 companies, integrating it into its Prisma AIRS platform. The move repositions the AI gateway layer from developer infrastructure into an enterprise security checkpoint. With AI agents making dozens of LLM calls per task, the gateway becomes a complete audit trail of autonomous system behavior. Palo Alto is adding identity, authentication, artifact scanning, automated red teaming, and runtime security to Portkey's existing support for 3,000 LLMs, MCP servers, and agents. The acquisition signals that the serious enterprise play in AI infrastructure sits at the intersection of gateway and security, not gateway and API management.
