Swiggy's engineering team built a seamless food ordering experience embedded inside the JioHotstar streaming app for IPL season, allowing users to order food without leaving the cricket stream. The integration involved embedding Swiggy's web app in a WebView, solving cross-company authentication via RSA-encrypted phone number sharing and coordinated SMS OTP auto-reading, redesigning layouts for split-screen viewports (fitting 6 restaurants where 2 showed before), building a dedicated integration playground to catch contract mismatches early, implementing two-layer rate limiting with dedicated infrastructure to handle IPL traffic spikes, and using GTM for cross-company analytics while deliberately excluding it from payment pages. The project was completed in 8 weeks across two companies with separate tech stacks and identity systems.
