Oracle announced Java 26 at JavaOne, introducing the Java Verified Portfolio (JVP) — a curated set of tools and services for AI-driven development that includes commercial support for JavaFX and the Helidon microservices framework. Oracle is proposing Helidon become an OpenJDK project. Ten new JDK Enhancement Proposals (JEPs) were advanced, including JEP 530 for improved primitive type handling in pattern matching, JEP 516 (Project Leyden) for faster cloud app startup via Ahead-of-Time caching, and removal of the legacy Applet API. Projects Babylon, Valhalla, and Panama aim to extend Java's reach into AI, GPU computing, and native library interoperability. A new Project Detroit is proposed to enable Java to call AI libraries written in other languages, initially supporting JavaScript and Python via V8 and CPython runtimes.
