OpenTitan, the first open source silicon Root of Trust (RoT), is now shipping in commercially available Chromebooks. Produced by Nuvoton, it marks a seven-year milestone for Google and the lowRISC-maintained open source community. OpenTitan is the first commercially available open source RoT to support post-quantum cryptography (PQC) secure boot via SLH-DSA, and achieves 90%+ functional and code coverage with 40k+ nightly tests. Next steps include deploying OpenTitan in Google datacenters later this year, developing a second-generation part with lattice-based PQC (ML-DSA, ML-KEM), and expanding the methodology to additional open source silicon designs. The project has grown from 2,500 to 29,200+ commits and 275+ contributors since its 2019 launch.
