OpenTelemetry has announced that key portions of its declarative configuration specification have reached stable status. The stabilization covers the JSON schema for the data model, the YAML representation of configuration files, and the in-memory representation of configuration data. Language implementations are now available in C++, Go, Java, JavaScript, and PHP, with .NET and Python still in development. The new YAML-based approach replaces the previous reliance on environment variables, allowing users to define trace, metric, and log pipelines in a single file that the SDK reads at startup via the OTEL_CONFIG_FILE environment variable. Future work includes dynamic/remote configuration, enabling ops teams to push config changes without code changes or redeployment.
