OpenAI is building a desktop “super app” that combines ChatGPT, its Codex coding platform, and an internal AI browser called Atlas into a single product. Greg Brockman will temporarily oversee the overhaul, while Chief of Applications Fidji Simo takes the lead on sales. Simo has framed the consolidation as a fix for internal fragmentation that’s been slowing development and hurting quality.
The strategic logic is clear enough: OpenAI wants to move up-market. Agentic AI workflows - where the software takes multi-step actions on a user’s behalf - are where the high-value compute spending is, and that’s primarily an enterprise and developer story, not a consumer chatbot one.
The competitive pressure from Anthropic is hard to ignore here. Anthropic is reportedly winning around 70% of head-to-head enterprise deals, which is a number that tends to focus minds. Microsoft and Google are also deeply entrenched in enterprise settings, and OpenAI needs a more coherent product surface to compete with them.
There’s a real tension in this move, though. ChatGPT’s growth was built on simplicity - anyone could use it. A complex workflow tool aimed at developers and enterprise buyers is a different product with a different audience. Whether OpenAI can serve both without muddying either is an open question.
There are also structural gaps to sort out. Enterprise buyers care about identity management and audit trails for AI agents, and those governance features aren’t something OpenAI has publicly addressed in detail. That’s table stakes for the deals they’re trying to win.
