Software Freedom Conservancy says it has stopped using Microsoft's GitHub for project hosting. The SFC is urging other software developers to do the same. The break with GitHub was precipitated by the general availability of GitHub Copilot, an AI coding assistant tool. GitHub's decision to release a for-profit product derived from FOSS code is "too much to bear"

Open source body quits GitHub, urges you to do the same

It’s not clear to me how moving an open source project to another platform will be anything more than a token gesture, considering that project would still be open source, hence ingestible by the same AI you would be protesting against.
We’re talking about an AI that requires financial resources to sustain itself. It’s not like GitHub is charging for the underlying code, which you could piece together yourself from various open source projects. It’s charging for the usage of an operational AI that greatly reduces your search time.

One of positive sides of FOSS is to be able to copy-paste other peoples code, which Copilot does. I don’t see how it is different from a programmer doing the same thing.
