The former Varnish Cache FOSS project has renamed itself to Vinyl Cache, while Varnish Software has simultaneously launched a new downstream project still called Varnish Cache. This post clarifies the distinction: Vinyl Cache is the direct continuation of the original independent FOSS project with the same maintainer team and governance, while the new Varnish Cache is a corporate-controlled fork by Varnish Software with its own governance, new code, and a trademark policy. Two Vinyl Cache board members draw an explicit parallel to the MySQL/MariaDB split when Oracle acquired MySQL, framing Varnish Software's actions as a corporate takeover of the project name.
