Valve engineer Timur Kristóf has submitted patches adding DRM format modifiers support to AMD GFX6 through GFX8 era GPUs (GCN 1.0 through Polaris/Fiji) in both the AMDGPU Linux kernel driver and Mesa user-space drivers. DRM format modifiers encode tiling, compression, and buffer layout details, enabling Vulkan-powered Wayland compositors, Zink (OpenGL-on-Vulkan), and cross-API interoperability (VAAPI/OpenGL/Vulkan) on these older cards that previously lacked this support or required fallbacks.
