Rust is a memory-safe general purpose programming language created by Graydon Hoare. It was designed to provide low-level control with high-level safety guarantees.
I’ve been learning Rust for the past three months and I thought I would share my experience.

I figured the official rust book was generally a good place to start
(because I didn’t want to spend $80 on a course on Udemy)
I learned the basics and made a simple project. a Guessing Game, then I made a terminal weather app.
Wanting to add a little personality to the weather app I wanted to try to make it a desktop window with a ui. that’s when I found <a href="https://tauri.app" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Tauri </a>a cross-platform framework for creating applications with Rust. you can even throw in your favorite front-end framework to simplify the process! I designed my weather app with <a href="https://svelte.dev" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Svelte </a>and <a href="https://tailwindcss.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Tailwindcss </a>for the frontend and Rust using the <a href="https://openweathermap.org" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">OpenWeather Api </a>as the backend

Obviously we can make things much cooler than a weather app in Rust
thus the phrase: “general purpose” programming language.
If you’ve been around the block surely you’ve heard of Ada Lovelace - the computer scientist that wrote a program for computers before computers even existed. I decided to use Rust to combine a local speech to text model with Google Gemini (since it’s AI api has a free tier) and ElevenLabs API. I wanted to use a local text to speech model but after struggling to get one to work for two hours I just went with <a href="https://elevenlabs.io" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">ElevenLabs </a>and an unofficial <a href="https://crates.io/crates/elevenlabs_tts" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">Rust crate</a> to interact with it all
After a few days of coding, it actually worked! I could have a conversation with the chatbot as if I was talking to another human; similar to ChatGPT’s voice model While it was pretty slow and limited the achievement was that I made it. and that was all that matters

Currently I’m working on another project in Rust where I can automatically be sent emails about certain topics I’m studying i.e. an automated system for learning.
The main reason I decided to learn Rust out of the dozens of programming languages out there is because I wanted a taste of the low-level world. (and it turns out Rust is still considered a high level language 😭). The best programming language is almost entirely subjective, however I do see why so many developers love it
Eventually I’ll get around to making the repositories of each of these projects public. Until then what are your thoughts on Rust? Is it worth learning?

Should I start learning Rust? I’ve been thinking about it lately… hmm

Rust, by virtue of having a large language spec, way too many features, and a robust type system that sometimes becomes an annoyance, can be considered a high level language because it’s expressive.
But it is a low level-programming language. It’s in the Linux kernel now, some drivers are written in it, etc.

I don’t know what you consider high level and low level from your point of view.
Rust is classified as a systems language, just like C and C++, but with high-level abstractions that don’t cost performance — what the creators themselves call “zero-cost abstractions.”
So, depending on the context, it can be described as both low and high level. What makes it special is precisely that it manages to be both at the same time without compromising either of them.
