The second edition of "Observability Engineering" is nearly complete and will be almost twice as long as the first edition. The new version has a clearer mission, focusing on software engineers instrumenting code and analyzing production systems with AI. Major updates include comprehensive coverage of OpenTelemetry, AI-era observability practices, and contributions from industry experts. A new section on "Observability Governance" addresses cost containment and tool migrations for platform teams. The book reflects how much the observability landscape has evolved since 2018, when Honeycomb was the only observability company.
