Buttons are often considered uncool in design because they have been around for a long time. However, button shape is important in graphical user interfaces to communicate that they can be used and to provide feedback to the user. Buttons that consist only of text or icons often lack the necessary signifiers and feedback.

It’s so good when someone points out that not all trends are necessary. And specifically, with buttons, in the way that the author demonstrates that buttons are good and worth giving care and attention to their continued design and use, it stripped away any conceived notion that buttons are uncool.
On second thought though… I’ve yet to actually hear someone say that buttons really are uncool. Is that actually a new trend?
