Once you understand how to structure prompts, manage sources, and choose the right output format, the tool becomes precise, structured, and reliable instead of generic.

Google released a major NotebookLM update with several significant improvements. Source processing capacity increased 8x and conversation memory grew 6x, resulting in a claimed 50% improvement in response quality for large source collections. The custom instruction field expanded from 500 to 10,000 characters, enabling detailed persona and formatting prompts. Audio overviews now offer four formats: Brief, Deep Dive, Critique, and Debate. A new Data Tables output type lets users generate structured spreadsheet comparisons from sources, exportable to Google Sheets. Visual outputs gained orientation, detail level, and custom prompt controls. Finally, NotebookLM notebooks can now be used as sources directly inside the Gemini app and custom Gems.
