MIT engineers developed advanced tissue models that accurately replicate liver architecture, including blood vessels and immune cells, to study metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). The microphysiological systems can model inflammation, insulin resistance, and metabolic dysfunction in early-stage liver disease. In separate research, the team used an earlier model to study resmetirom, finding it can trigger inflammatory responses that may explain why the drug only helps 30% of MASH patients. These models enable researchers to identify drug targets, validate treatments, and understand disease progression more effectively than animal models.
