Linux developer David Woodhouse (Amazon/AWS) submitted a six-patch series to the kernel mailing list introducing a CONFIG_LEGACY_IP option that would allow building the Linux kernel with IPv6-only support and optionally deprecate IPv4. Posted on April 1st, Woodhouse clarified the intent is genuine: while the deprecation warnings and naming may not land immediately, the goal of cleanly separating CONFIG_INET and CONFIG_IPV4/6 to enable single-protocol builds is a real objective worth pursuing, especially for forward-looking environments.
