Following a donation from Embrace and a call for contributors, OpenTelemetry now has a Kotlin SDK in active development.
The project is looking for contributors and folks who are interested in using the library in their application.
Why launch OpenTelemetry for Kotlin? Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) allows running Kotlin code on many different platforms, such as browser, server, and desktop environments. Traditionally Kotlin has been most popular on Android and the JVM, but with the advent of KMP the number of folks using it to share code between different platforms has been steadily growing.

OpenTelemetry's platform is an observability framework, offering insights into distributed tracing, metrics collection, and log management for cloud-native applications. Through documentation, tutorials, and community contributions, OpenTelemetry provides insights into instrumenting applications to monitor performance and troubleshoot issues. Developers and DevOps teams can learn about distributed tracing standards, telemetry data formats, and integration with observability tools to gain visibility into complex distributed systems.

OpenTelemetry now has a dedicated Kotlin SDK in active development, following a donation from Embrace. The SDK supports Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) targets including Android, JVM, iOS, and JS, with initial implementations for Logging and Tracing APIs. The APIs are not yet stable as the team seeks real-world feedback. Long-term goals include stabilizing the APIs, ensuring spec compliance, improving mobile-friendliness (e.g., handling process terminations), and growing the Kotlin contributor community. The project is actively seeking contributors and users to provide feedback via GitHub issues and the CNCF Slack #otel-kotlin channel.
