Microsoft is previewing a new HTML attribute called 'focusgroup' in Microsoft Edge that simplifies building keyboard-accessible websites. Currently, less than half of websites use tabindex, the existing mechanism for keyboard navigation, partly because it requires complex code or JavaScript libraries. focusgroup aims to reduce that complexity, resulting in less code to maintain and faster page loads. The implementation has been contributed to the Chromium project, making it available to other Chromium-based browsers. With many countries requiring WCAG compliance as part of anti-discrimination law, focusgroup could become a widely useful tool for web developers.
