A new GCC back-end for WebAssembly has been proposed via a patch series on the GCC mailing list. Currently around 3,000 lines of code and marked as a request for comments, the back-end is in early development and lacks features like WASM reference types, exceptions, and debug info. This is the first significant WASM activity for GCC in years, potentially offering an alternative to the dominant LLVM/Clang-based WebAssembly toolchain. It still awaits approval from the GCC Steering Committee.
