Sleep apnea causes repeated breathing cessation during sleep due to throat muscle relaxation. Traditional CPAP machines are effective but have poor patient compliance, with up to 50% abandoning treatment within a year. A new drug combination called AD109 targets the neuromuscular causes directly using aroxybutynin and atomoxetine to maintain upper airway muscle tone. Phase 2 trials showed a 45% reduction in breathing disruptions, though side effects include dry mouth, urinary hesitancy, and insomnia. Phase 3 trials are ongoing to test efficacy across severity levels before potential commercialization.
