Researchers at King's College London have developed a novel aluminum-based catalyst called cyclotrialumane, a triangular trimer of three aluminum atoms. This compound could potentially replace expensive platinum-group metals (PGMs) in industrial catalysis. The trimer's stable structure makes it effective across a wide variety of solutions, and it has already demonstrated capability in splitting H2 into H+ ions and ethene polymerization. Researchers also claim it can catalyze entirely new reactions and produce previously unknown chemicals, opening significant possibilities for the chemical industry.
