NetHack 5.0.0 has been released on May 2, 2026. This major version is a direct descendant of NetHack 3.6 and brings architectural improvements including C99 standard compliance, cross-compilation support, and replacement of the yacc/lex-based level and dungeon compilers with Lua-based alternatives loaded at runtime. Existing saved games and bones files are incompatible with this release. Binaries are available from nethack.org with SHA256 checksums for verification.
