Model Context Protocol (MCP) provides a standardized way to connect AI tools and LLMs to external data sources and services. Created by Anthropic and adopted across the industry, MCP acts like a "USB-C port for AI" - enabling agents to access databases, APIs, and tools through a unified interface. The C# SDK allows developers to build MCP servers as console apps or hosted HTTP services, exposing tools, resources, and prompts that AI assistants can invoke. Developers can add MCP functionality to existing REST APIs with minimal code changes, register tools using attributes and dependency injection, and test servers using the MCP inspector or directly in VS Code/Visual Studio with GitHub Copilot. The protocol solves context limitations by giving LLMs real-time access to current data, documentation, and services beyond their training cutoff dates.
