That’s a great counter-argument to the article.
Being frustrated many times with how convoluted neovim’s API is, I now where the author’s frustration comes from. He took the chance to write something that perhaps might help neovim (and plugin) devs to focus on onboarding new users and ease of use.
But I think most of neovim’s complexity comes from it being backwards compatible with Vim (at least Vim 7, don’t know for sure). This helps vimmers move to NeoVim, but doesn’t really help newcomers to the (Neo)Vim world.
Vim has old features and baggage that we simply don’t need today. But removing them would decrease the appeal to switch from Vim.
Also, I don’t think most devs enjoy spending weeks configuring NeoVim to work like their previous editor… then fix their plugin integration when stuff stops working.
Being fatigued with it myself, I’m using helix again, I miss NeoVim but am still tired of how it requires so much fiddling to tweak certain things.
In helix you get astronomically easier configuration, very good set of default features, and can get 80% of a highly customized NeoVim experience with 20% of the time cost and none of the old baggage and corner cases you need to worry about in Vim/NeoVim.
