Robinson Foundry experiments with casting sodium chloride (table salt) like a metal, testing two methods: glass-style casting in a ceramic mold inside an electric kiln, and metal-style sand casting using a crucible. The sand casting method proves more successful, producing parts with a gunmetal finish due to a reaction between molten salt and sand. While the resulting pieces are brittle, they work well for decorative purposes and are made from an extremely cheap material. The glass-style casting grew larger, more translucent crystals but became stuck in the porous ceramic mold.
