IEEE has released the 7012-2025 standard (MyTerms), a new mechanism for exchanging personal information between individuals and online service providers. The standard flips the traditional model by letting users control their privacy requirements through machine-readable agreements transmitted via HTTP headers, with both parties maintaining identical contract records. MyTerms aims to replace cookie notices and is positioned as particularly relevant for AI agents in agentic commerce, where automated systems will need their own identities and terms. The standard took eight years to develop and provides legally binding contracts for data usage, covering scenarios from service delivery to AI training.
