MyFitnessPal has acquired Cal AI, the AI-powered calorie counting app built by two teenagers that amassed over 15 million downloads and $30 million in annual recurring revenue in under two years. The seven-person Cal AI team, including co-founder CEO Zach Yadegari, has been retained. The Cal AI app will remain independent with its core photo-based calorie estimation feature, but has already been integrated with MyFitnessPal's database of 20 million foods. MFP views the two apps as serving distinct audiences: Cal AI targets users who want speed and simplicity, while MFP caters to those wanting detailed nutritional accuracy. Deal terms were not disclosed, but the acquisition closed in December after nearly a year of negotiations.
