My top 3 things I focus on when coding

Step one: avoid getting fired by not making stupid mistakes.

I love the “problem solve, not program” approach. I had an experience this weekend where I was trying to solve something that seemed rather trivial, but I was running into some blocks. I knew the problem I was trying to solve, but was focusing on a programmatic solution. After some searching + LLMing, I found a function that would assist me that I didn’t remember existed.
Once I got a good direction, I was able to integrate the knowledge and solve the problem, rather than spin my wheels trying to come up with a novel solution on my end (and most likely overengineering the solution in the process).
In this way, these LLM tools are indispensable because they are sort of like <a href="https://cheewebdevelopment.com/ai-workflow-interactive-documentation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">interactive documentation</a>, where I can chat with the “codex” of the internet and find those functions and methods, without having to memorize them.
Before we had good search engines, we had to comb through reference books to find something that might work. Before LLMs, we would have to phrase the perfect search query in hopes of finding a similar issue on Google/StackOverflow. Now we can get to that information so quickly, and the gap between the problem and the solution is much smaller now.

Being a Principle Engineer on multiple projects (and manager), I often have a view of the solution from 30,000 feet and the first time I see the code at the line level is when something does not work and someone needs help debugging.
I have never seen this code before, but know what it should do. And normally within 10 mins I have located the offending bug.
You don’t need to learn all the ins and outs of evert lly language or framework if you can approach the problem from a high level and solve it. As said, AI can help you fill in the blanks.
Learn and master the basics of computer science, before trying to remember every function or class library in the language.
