Web Dev Simplified

The web development job market is recovering after the 2022-2024 downturn, with listings up 12-13% since May 2025. AI model improvements are plateauing while tooling continues advancing steadily. AI won't replace developers but will become a required skill, similar to autopilot requiring pilots. Junior developers should focus on three areas: mastering fundamentals by writing code manually, learning to work with AI tools and prompt engineering, and developing deep expertise in advanced features (like modern CSS) where AI performs poorly. Code review and reading skills are now critical. The job outlook for 2026-2027 is positive, especially for junior roles.

My Honest Thoughts on AI and the Job Market in 2026

Development as it used to be - temporary. Yes, no need to deny modern AI tools/helpers
The driver is forced to drive the car to be in the right place, although he has no desire to drive a car. The creators of the autopilot, due to imperfection at this stage, shift responsibility to a person, forcing him to control and interfere with the driving process.
Also AI, any consequences of the written code are the responsibility of the developer.
We need to change our view of development. Coding is now like parking. It is also possible manually, but time, accuracy - automation wins. This is a routine job that requires precision.
But where to come, where to park, what needs to be developed - the tasks of a person

Still, ignore the 200% peak etc, market is down to 1/3 less jobs of an industry that is massive, which means a massive number of people is out of work.

Ai is absolutely amazing at “modern CSS”. Try cursor, try planning mode, turn opus on, don’t write code any more

You’re spot on about what to learn in 2026. Fundamentals are going to be consistently at the forefront of required skills, along with the <a href="https://confident-coding.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">fundamentals of debugging and troubleshooting</a>. Knowing how to code is half the battle, and codegen has made getting working code pretty trivial. Knowing how to problem solve and rely on your baked-in critical thinking skills is going to be one of the most sought after skills over the next decade.
