Starting a homelab can provide hands-on experience with various technologies. It's crucial to plan your homelab carefully to avoid unnecessary expenses. Key hardware choices include cost-effective and upgradable options like old prebuilt machines and single-board devices. For operating systems, Proxmox for virtualization, TrueNAS Scale for NAS, and Docker for containerization are excellent choices. Essential software includes virtualization and networking tools, security solutions, development frameworks, automation tools, and monitoring systems. Documenting your setup is vital for troubleshooting and future upgrades. Start small and scale up as your needs evolve.

My Homelab Journey

Have you considered using Unbound with your Pi-hole for additional privacy? Also, did you secure your Pi-hole with a self-signed certificate or use Let’s Encrypt? If you don’t access it remotely and it’s set up only for local network use, you could create a self-signed certificate with OpenSSL for added security.
Here is my setup for pihole:

<li>Prepared the Raspberry Pi: I installed a special software called DietPi.</li>
<li>Set up a web server: I used a program called Lighttpd.</li>
<li>Installed Pi-hole: This helps block unwanted ads and tracking online.</li>
<li>Added Unbound: This helps speed up internet requests and improve privacy.</li>
<li>Connected everything together: I linked Unbound with Pi-hole to work better. (added unbound to pi-hole upstream)</li>
<li>Installed OpenSSL: This adds security features – specifically for securing login page from port 80 -&gt; 443 access thus https:// is then accessible.</li>
<li>Tried using Caddy: I had to uninstall this because it didn’t work well with Lighttpd.</li>
<li>Set up DNSCrypt: This helps secure my internet requests (on devices setup for Wi-Fi using windows 10/11: network &amp; internet &gt; Wi-Fi &gt; Hardware Properties &gt; DNS server assignment (now saying Encrypted instead of unencrypted because of DNSCrypt).</li>
<li>Added a VPN: This helps keep my online activities private and reduces MitM.</li>
