My favorite ESP32 project doesn't automate anything, and I haven't had to touch it in months

A personal maker project built around an ESP32 and four daisy-chained MAX7219 LED matrix modules that displays the current time and scrolls the now-playing track name. Running ESPHome with ESP-IDF, it connects to Home Assistant over Wi-Fi for time sync via SNTP and media player state. A custom 3D-printed enclosure makes it feel like a finished product rather than a prototype. The author argues that not every maker project needs to automate something or solve a problem — sometimes building something just because it looks good and brings joy is reason enough.
